About the Competition

The Burr-Hamilton Essay Competition motivates young minds to nurture the qualities that transform promising students into exceptional writers: fostering independent thought, deepening knowledge, honing clear reasoning, conducting critical analysis, and mastering the art of persuasive expression.

Participants are encouraged to delve beyond the surface, examining political, social, and personal dimensions as they explore the competition's interesting questions.

All of our judges come from top schools such as Harvard, Princeton, and Oxford. The judges will choose their favorite essays across five subjects: History, Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and Psychology.

Demonstrate Independent Thought

Our competition allows students to explore challenges beyond their normal school curriculum.

Refine Skills of Argumentation

We hope to see a diverse array of perspectives, drawing from rigorous research and critical thinking.

Have Work Assessed by Experts

The essay competition is judged by panelists from Harvard, Princeton, and Oxford.

Category 1: History

Q: To what extent do the mistakes of powerful individuals shape history?

Category 2: Politics

Q: In what ways have political ideologies evolved over time?

Category 3: Psychology

Q: Investigate the psychological impact of interpersonal conflicts on individuals and society throughout history.

Category 4: Philosophy

Q: Demonstrate through a historical figure the meaning of a good life.

Category 5: Economics

Q: Is capitalism the most effective economic system?
